For
the first time in US history, a presidential
election in one state has resulted in a statistical tie.*
No amount of recounting will eliminate the error
inherent in the counting process.
One solution is to give Bush and Gore
an equal number of electoral college votes
from Florida. But the law doesn't provide for this
and so the brattish bickering continues.
Both sides are right: both of
these guys are losers.
This election clearly points out that the
U.S. needs to adopt runoff elections; that the
Electoral College's time is long gone; that vote-
counting technology is woefully inadequate in
America's poorest communities; that elections in
in the world's richest nation can be easily
manipulated, free from the scrutiny
of the Judicial Branch. Thanks to the incompetence of
its leaders,
the US looks
like a bunch of idiots to the world
at large. Some
masters of technology
and democracy we are.
And most
importantly, thank you,
justices of the Supreme Court, for selecting
a president for us. Democracy is something that
we Americans just can't be trusted with.
*
- I was wrong about that. It was an active
coup carried out by the Bush family and conservative
Supreme Court justices. But don't take my word for it.
